A beautiful and dark fairy tale by one of the masters of the genre, the wonderful and deeply beloved Terry Gilliam.
Traveling the world with his troupe, Doctor Parnassus gives the audience of his show the opportunity to pass through a magical mirror into a fantastic world. However, Parnassus's magical gift comes at a price: for many centuries, he has been playing gambling games with the devil himself, who is about to come and claim his prize - Parnassus's daughter Valentina.
Gilliam described the plot of the film as "a fun and humorous story about the consequences of our personal choices in life." Gilliam has repeatedly stated in interviews that the character of Parnassus is largely autobiographical and his arc is a story about an aging man with a vivid imagination in a world that no longer listens to him.
The role in this film was the last for Heath Ledger. The tragic death of the actor during filming threatened to shut down the project, but Terry Gilliam managed to change the plot so as not to lose a single frame of what the actor had already done for the film. Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law were invited to complete Ledger's work: they all play different incarnations of his character.
