This is a very strange story about a jazz musician who kills (or not?) his wife, and then inexplicably disappears from prison. It is impossible to retell the plot. The narrative is not just the typical linear development of the events. The scenes follow each other in an indefinite (at least for the viewer) sequence. This is typical Lynch: the viewer will have to break his head pretty much to build up any interpretation of the plot.
Lynch's new creation divided film critics — some decided that the director's career had gone downhill, others (in particular, Slavoj Zizek) were delighted.
The film featured songs by Lou Reed, David Bowie, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson; Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) was engaged in the preparation of the soundtrack. Composer Olga Neuwirth and Nobel laureate in literature Elfrida Jelinek wrote an opera based on its plot.
