Donnie Darko

A cult science fiction film built on the principles of magical realism (like «Twin Peaks», for example).

The film was directed by 25-year-old debutant Richard Kelly, who captured and packaged the spirit of his generation so brilliantly that it gives the impression that the film from 2001 comes from the late 80s. This is an outstanding example of sci-fi with parallel worlds, time loops, and a characteristic bluish tint on the screen. A very good teenage film.

Donnie, with the speaking surname Darko (from darkness), is either a young schizophrenic or a great time traveler, which is ultimately not important. One day, a toothy humanoid rabbit named Frank (who has long become a meme among cinephiles) comes to him, orders Donnie to follow him, and informs him that there are exactly 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds left until the end of the world. Returning from a nocturnal lunatic walk, the hero discovers that a detached airplane turbine has fallen onto his room, and he miraculously escaped certain death. Donnie decides to save his family and girlfriend, and with them, the whole world, by continuing to follow the commands of his frightening, long-eared friend.

«Donnie Darko» was filmed in 28 days—exactly the amount of time events unfold in it—and three years later it was re-edited by the director himself. The new version includes 20 minutes that were cut in the theatrical release, which are important for understanding the plot. That's the version we will watch.
