One of Lars von Trier's main films, a «Brechtian drama» set in fictional settings about a girl who initially believed in people very much and about how people disappoint.
In the 1930s, amidst the Great Depression, Grace, who is fleeing from gangsters, seeks refuge in the town of Dogville (population: 15), with unexpected consequences for everyone involved.
The film stands out for its almost complete lack of sets: the boundaries of houses and rooms are only symbolically marked on the floor of the film studio. Streets are represented by two parallel lines with the name written between them, houses are represented by house plans, a bush is represented by the silhouette of a bush with the label «bush», even a dog is drawn.
In short, the main idea of the film is that humans are extremely dangerous creatures. The director exposes the inhabitants of Dogville, who in this case resemble more like laboratory rats, to the influence of two very powerful emotions: fear and the desire to control, even if it's just over one individual. Add to that society's universal ability to justify any action, and you have Dogville.
