Reflecting on the «Blue Velvet», Isabella Rossellini, who played the main role, notices the following: «In David's films, sensory experience is more important than a story is told. These are not character studies from an anthropological or psychological point of view. It's a surreal experience».

As Lynch himself admits, «Blue Velvet» was his first film in which he began to pay special attention to the music. This was partly due to the acquaintance with the composer Angelo Badalamenti. He took up the soundtrack, guided by Lynch's parting words, so that he wrote it while listening to Dmitry Shostakovich's Symphony No. 15 in A Major. Since then, Badalamenti's melodic and melancholy music has become an integral part of Lynch's cinematography.
