An homage and parody of the Cousteau team (the film is dedicated to the memory of the great oceanographer) in which explorer Steve Zissou (played by Bill Murray) and his team make films about the underwater world. But during one of the shoots, a rare jaguar shark eats the hero's best friend.
"I will seek revenge," Steve Zissou declares at a press conference, gathers a motley crew, and sets out in search of his deadly enemy.
"The Life Aquatic" once received mixed reviews from critics and failed at the box office, but today it looks like Anderson's most unusual early film. It is not only a creative adventure comedy (this is where the director first actively began to use stop-motion animation), but also a clever film about cinema. The plot quickly diverges into two parts: the real story and the one that Zissou wants to show in his film. The journey to find the bloodthirsty shark turns into a witty and quite cynical fable about what people are willing to do for art.
