On May 8, Tbilisi will host a meeting with one of the most prominent and influential figures of contemporary Russian literature, the author of the bestselling novel “Fairy Tale” — Vladimir Sorokin.
The evening program includes a reading of selected excerpts from the novel, a conversation with the audience, and an autograph session. This is a rare opportunity to hear the author’s live voice — a writer who for decades has remained one of the main provocateurs and visionaries of Russian literature, reshaping its perception at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Sorokin is a legendary figure: his books have been translated into dozens of languages, published by major international houses, and included in European and American university curricula. The author of “Blue Lard,” “Day of the Oprichnik,” “Telluria,” and “The Norm,” he has been shaping the cultural landscape for decades — breaking conventions and reinventing literary language. His work is revolutionary and uncompromising, opening unexpected horizons for understanding the individual and society.
Like his previous novel “Heritage” (banned in Russia), “Fairy Tale” was published by the independent publishing house Freedom Letters.
The new novel is a parable — wild and mesmerizing, ruthless yet deeply moving. In “Fairy Tale,” a grim, post-apocalyptic Russia comes to life, where landfills transform into territories of hope, and journeys across fields of waste become paths of sacred transformation.
Sorokin leads readers through purifying absurdity — from horrifying prose of decay to flashes of grace. “Fairy Tale” is a new epic of Russian consciousness: flawed and luminous, humiliated and dreaming.
The novel has become one of the most discussed literary events of the year — a philosophical reflection on power, faith, and human nature.
The evening in Tbilisi is not merely a meeting with a key figure of contemporary Russian prose, but an opportunity to engage with living literature of freedom. Books by Freedom Letters — known for publishing some of the boldest texts and authors banned in Russia — will be available at the event.
