The renowned Georgian choreographer, ballet dancer, and teacher, and founder of the Georgian ballet company, Vakhtang Chabukiani, lived in this apartment from 1947 until his death on April 6, 1992.
On May 10, 1993, Chabukiani's apartment was transferred to the Ministry of Culture for the establishment of a memorial house museum. Temporary management was entrusted to his niece, Sofio Gordon, who passed away shortly afterwards.
During this difficult period in Georgia's history, widespread economic hardship made it impossible to properly preserve the belongings in Chabukiani's apartment as museum exhibits. As a result, the museum ceased operating and was temporarily closed and sealed.
On November 17, 1999, the Vakhtang Chabukiani International Center, headed by its president Eter Gugushvili, submitted a proposal to Minister of Culture V. Asatiani, following a decision by its founders, to reopen the house museum in celebration of the 90th anniversary of Chabukiani's birth.
However, due to insufficient funding, the Ministry of Culture was once again unable to provide the necessary support. At the minister's request, Tbilisi City Hall assumed responsibility for resolving the organizational and financial challenges.
On March 31, 2000, Order No. 3/22 was issued by Georgian Minister of Culture V. Asatiani, officially transferring the Vakhtang Chabukiani House Museum to the administration of Tbilisi City Hall.
The Vakhtang Chabukiani Memorial House Museum preserves the artist's personal belongings, including furniture, a grand piano, stage costumes, a wide range of historical documents, photographs, his private library, and personal archives.
Among the museum's unique exhibits is a certificate from the Cosmos–Earth International Star Catalogue (No. 35110407025), documenting the naming of a previously unnamed star in the constellation Cygnus after Vakhtang Chabukiani.
The museum's renovated exhibition officially opened on February 27, 2017, symbolically marking the 107th anniversary of the legendary dancer's birth.
