Tour description:
The Birtvisi Fortress complex is located in Kvemo Kartli, in the Algeti Gorge, northeast of T’et’ritskaro. The Birtvisi Fortress has witnessed great parts of Georgian history. In its time, Birtvisi was considered impregnable. It is located in a naturally inaccessible place. Birtvisi is not a regular fortress surrounded by walls and towers. Here, on a large area enclosed by high mountains, below the ground level of the access, rocky and pointed ridges are scattered. The builders chose precisely this natural stronghold. After that they carried out extensive work to artificially reinforce all passages and suspicious places. All necessary areas are blocked by walls and prepared for defence. Near the entrance, on a height, stands the cylindrical watch-tower-so-called “Sheupovari”, whose walls are equipped with loopholes. Among the fortress ruins, besides the defensive structures, one can see residential and agricultural buildings and a water reservoir. In the late feudal era Birtvisi belonged to the feudal family of the Baratashvili.

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
