"The Step" - 1985, 84', dir. Alesandre (Sasha) Rekhviashvili
Aleksandre (Sasha) Rekhviashvili was one of the most distinctive voices in Georgian cinema, known for the philosophical depth of his films, visual minimalism, and profound interest in the inner world of human beings. As both a cinematographer and director, he left a significant mark on the history of Georgian filmmaking. His works often explore themes of alienation, spiritual search, and the longing for freedom.
The film The Step (1985) tells the story of Alexi, a man estranged from his surroundings and the people around him. After a long internal struggle, he decides to leave his job at a scientific research institute and move to the countryside to become a natural sciences teacher. The film is a meditative and deeply reflective work about spiritual choice, loneliness, and the search for the true meaning of life.
