The play The Murder of Gonzago by Bulgarian playwright Nedyalko Yordanov is a play within a play. We all remember the central theme of the third act of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, where the traveling actors, on the prince’s order and based on his script, perform a play. This very theme is developed in Yordanov’s work, which tells the short story of a troupe of wandering actors.
Here, everyone has a defined role — some are aware of it, while others are not. Intrigues, revenge, lies, and betrayal abound. It is a demonstration of what we encounter in everyday life: someone plays another’s part, while the victory goes to a third — seemingly completely on the sidelines.
