An almost biblical parable about the strength of spirit and the thorny path to holiness.
A stranger, for no apparent reason, gives a homeless vagabond 200 francs and asks him to return the money to the local church when he's able to. The vagabond is a man of honor; he sincerely tries to keep his promise, and everything seems to be going well—until, at the last moment, something always goes wrong. It turns out that life is full of distractions, and it's just impossible to stay focused on what truly matters.
The film won the Golden Lion at the 45th Venice International Film Festival.
