Synopsis:
Respect for others’ values is one of humanity’s eternal moral dilemmas.
This story, based on Vazha-Pshavela’s iconic poem, explores the complex themes of hospitality, cultural conflict, moral integrity, and tradition.
Set in the mountainous region of Pshavi-Khevsureti, the plot follows Jokhola, who offers shelter to his wounded enemy Zviadauri — a warrior from a rival tribe. Despite their enmity, Jokhola honors the ancient code of hospitality, which obligates the host to protect his guest.
This noble act, however, clashes with the expectations of his community and leads to tragic consequences.
Ultimately, Jokhola chooses moral integrity over tribal loyalty, offering a powerful meditation on trust, honor, and the cost of staying true to one's principles.
The story of Jokhola and Zviadauri is a timeless tragedy of human courage and ethical conflict.
Batumi Ilia Chavchavadze State Drama Theatre opened in 1952 and is the oldest dramatic theatre in Ajara, based in the centre of Batumi.
