The Gospel According to St. Matthew

One of the most unusual and radical films about the life of Christ, directed by the Marxist rebel Pier Paolo Pasolini. Rejecting the traditional religious grandeur, the director creates a строгий, almost documentary-like portrayal of the Gospel story. Faithfully following the Gospel of Matthew in both plot and dialogue, the film presents the life of Jesus through Pasolini’s distinctive Marxist-Catholic perspective.

Through simple means, the brilliant filmmaker achieves what many before and after him could not: he strips the Gospel of its reverential distance, desacralizes the figure of Jesus Christ, and brings the Scripture closer — making it accessible and understandable to everyone.
