The Birth of Fantasy — The Lord of the Rings

💡 On October 3, the Academy of Thinking will host a salon-style conversation with Georgian author, actor, and TV host Aleksandre Lortkipanidze on the topic “The Birth of Fantasy — The Lord of the Rings.”

➡️ John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was the author who gave the fantasy genre an entirely new scale and depth. Drawing on his profound knowledge of languages, mythology, and history, he created the world of Middle-earth, complete with its own languages, peoples, cultures, and history, laying one of the key foundations of modern fantasy.

During the session, we will explore how the world of The Lord of the Rings came to life, how Tolkien’s personal experiences, World War I, and the realities of his time influenced his work, and why his characters, themes, and stories remain relevant to this day.

We will also discuss how Tolkien shaped the subsequent development of the fantasy genre and why exploring his work is one of the best ways to understand the very nature of fantasy.
