A Ukrainian film by the great master, a romantic poem about the Hutsul Romeo and Juliet - Ivan and Marichka.
The film describes the life and customs of the Hutsul ethnic group. For centuries, their land was under the control of successive foreign powers, but the Hutsuls managed to preserve their distinctiveness, language, rituals, and customs.
The film was shot in authentic Hutsul huts and the surrounding areas of the village of Kryvorivnia in the Verkhovyna district of the Ivano-Frankivsk region, where Mikhail Kotsiubynsky wrote his novella, which served as the basis for this film.
