18th-century Italian playwright and theater reformer Carlo Goldoni wrote comedies, tragicomedies, librettos, poems, and more. He is considered the founder of Italian realist comedy.
Goldoni’s works became known in Georgia in the late 19th century with the play "The Grouchy Benefactor", translated from Italian by Ivane Machabeli in 1879. The play was immediately staged under the title "As It Rumbles, It Doesn’t Rain". Many of Goldoni’s other plays have also been performed on the Georgian stage, including "The Servant of Two Masters", "The Beautiful Georgian Woman", "The Mistress of the Inn", "The Bride by Advertisement", and more.
The play "The Gossiping Women", written in the style of commedia dell’arte, was first published in 1750. Goldoni wrote this comedy specifically for the annual Venetian Carnival.
Beppo and Kechina decide to get married, but the malicious gossip of the women around them threatens their happiness. Just before the wedding, rumors spread throughout Venice that Kechina is not really her father’s daughter. Beppo begins to doubt and hesitate, leading to a whirlwind of chaos and commotion.
