A touching story about a schoolgirl named Umi, whose father died in the Korean War. While her mother is away on business, the girl has to take charge of the household, particularly remembering to raise the flags every morning—a rule set by her father so that he could see from the sea that he was expected home. In their town, there is a school club that is at risk of being closed, and Umi, along with other student activists, must travel to Tokyo to meet with the authorities to save the building from destruction. Now she is choosing her own path in life and in the world.
Goro Miyazaki excels in his role as the son of an animation genius and is not concerned about being forever overshadowed by his father's fame.
