Sita Sings the Blues

This animated film tells two parallel stories: the story of the heroine of the "Ramayana," the goddess Sita (whose husband, Rama, accuses her of infidelity and abandons her, and she tries to prove her innocence), and the story of Nina Paley herself, who is missing her boyfriend, who has gone to India.

The film features numerous songs by the American jazz singer from the 1930s, Annette Hanshaw, which are performed by Sita in the plot.

Nina Paley is a veteran of the comics industry and an activist for the Free Culture Movement. In 1998, she began making animated films for festivals on her own. This is her first full-length film, which she drew alone over five years on her home computer.

🏆 The film received over 30 awards at various film festivals, including the award for Best Animated Feature at the International Animated Film Festival in Annecy and a special mention in the "Generation 14+" youth competition at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival.
