The story of a Jewish boy living in Bologna who in 1858, after a devout servant secretly baptized him, was forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. Edgar's distraught parents do everything to get their son back. However, time passes, and everyone adjusts to the new realities. The boy becomes a devout Catholic, his father adapts to societal hatred, and the Mortara family does not die of longing. You can learn to live with anything, but what happened remains a state crime.
