This three-time Oscar-winning melodrama from 19th-century New Zealand is about a mute English pianist who marries a rough colonist to escape poverty.
The film's soundtrack was included in the list of the 100 best soundtracks of all time.
One of the Oscars (and there were three) was received by young actress Anna Paquin, it was her debut. "I almost fell off my chair when she started," Jane Campion said of Anna's auditions. "She told a long, incredibly passionate story about how Ada lost her voice, and you completely believe her. It's rare to meet someone so young with such acting abilities."
Not only did it win three Oscars, but it was also the first ever Palme d'Or awarded to a female director.
