Erotic detective thriller in the style of neonoire. The film, which earned Lynch a second Oscar nomination for Best Director, is now considered one of the greatest films of the 80s. The American Film Institute included it in the lists of the 100 best American films in 100 years and the 10 best American films in 10 classic genres.
Today, the movie is often spoken of as an example of the synthesis of cinema and pop art or expressionism painting with saturated colors common for these areas.
As Lynch himself admits, «Blue Velvet» was his first film in which he began to pay special attention to the music. This was partly due to the acquaintance with the composer Angelo Badalamenti. He took up the soundtrack, guided by Lynch's parting words, so that he wrote it while listening to Dmitry Shostakovich's Symphony No. 15 in A Major. Since then, Badalamenti's melodic and melancholy music has become an integral part of Lynch's cinematography.
