The first full-length film by Lynch instantly became a cult classic. It has everything that made the director recognizable: dreams bordering on reality, an abundance of symbolism, and even his signature velvet curtains.
Lynch himself called this film «a dream of dark and disturbing things» and assured that it was his «most subtle and spiritual film.»
The filming took place at night in semi-garage conditions and lasted for 5 years. In order to raise money, Lynch had to do all sorts of odd jobs, including newspaper delivery. But after the premiere, Mel Brooks offered the director to work on the film «The Elephant Man,» and George Lucas invited him to direct «Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.» Lynch accepted the first offer but declined the second one.
