The film, directed by someone who has crossed the boundaries of what is permissible in modern cinema, presents a story without a visible plot and without the usual character development. Moreover, the characters not only fail to evolve throughout the film, but their very nature does not inspire any desire to identify with them. Johnny (David Thewlis) begins the action with the rape of a woman in an alley, after which he steals a car and drives to London, where he engages in an intelligent conversation with another woman who is constantly under the influence of drugs. Later, her neighbor appears, proving to be just as "exposed" as her friends…
One critic remarked that Mike Leigh made a film so "bare" that he managed to film skin itself. Watching the film is decidedly impossible, yet it is much harder to look away from it.
Two awards at the Cannes Film Festival: Best Director (Mike Leigh) and Best Actor (David Thewlis). Nominated for the "Palme d'Or."
