More than a hundred years ago, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau created a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker's work, which was highly praised but only much later. Robert Eggers (*The Lighthouse*, *The Witch*) spent ten years crafting his version of this vampire nightmare.
Set in the 1930s, Count Orlok plans to purchase an estate in the German town of Wisborg. A young realtor, Thomas, recently married to Ellen (played by Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp), travels to Transylvania to finalize the paperwork. However, the aristocratic vampire becomes captivated by Ellen, with whom he shares a mysterious connection.
Eggers’ dark and evocative gothic style, which places the heroine at the center rather than the monster, has charmed the global press (with 84% on Rotten Tomatoes) and became the most commercially successful work of his career.
