This is not a film for the faint of heart. One of those films before which it is not customary to wish "enjoy your viewing".
The darkness of night, crimson reflections on the walls of the den, faces as pale as sheets. The hero wanders through the labyrinth of stairs and passages of one of the underground gay clubs. His goal is to find and kill a man he has never seen with his eyes. But he has a weighty reason to hate: a stranger raped his girlfriend to death, with whom he accidentally collided in a deserted urban passage.
The film premiered at Cannes, and the audience was so shocked that some of them needed medical assistance. Here is one of the comments: "In 25 years of my service, there has never been anything like this at the Cannes Film Festival. Some scenes of this film are unbearably difficult to watch, even for us professionals."
But of course, it would be wrong to assume that Noe makes his films just to give us an hour and a half of nausea and dizziness. The humanistic message of "Irreversible" (as well as his other films) is obvious: do not be indifferent to what is happening around you; do not pass by someone else's misfortune, love each other and cherish your loved ones.
