A grand anti-war film based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the most expensive film in the history of Germany.
In 1918, very young German soldiers are dying one by one in the muddy trench sludge, while a starched delegation travels in a clean train to the Compiègne Forest for negotiations on a ceasefire.
This is only the third adaptation of the famous novel, which has "luckily" come out right now, this year. The director, following Remarque, emphatically proclaims that one should categorically not take pride in World War I in particular (and wars in general).
