A legendary dystopia, the most expensive project in the history of German silent cinema, which nearly drove the studio to bankruptcy, as well as a film that set one of the important vectors for the development of cinematic art as a whole.
Metropolis, the city of the future, is divided into two parts. Underground are the living quarters of the workers, above them are the factories with machines. In the upper city are offices, wealthy neighborhoods, and entertainment gardens. All power in the city belongs to the magnate Joh Fredersen. His son Freder suspects the injustice that prevails in Metropolis. Descending into the machine zone, he is horrified. Unable to come to terms with what he sees, Freder begins a fight against evil.
