The museum was established in 1991 and has been located since its foundation in the memorial house at 1 Zandukeli Street. This is where Merab Kostava, a National Hero of Georgia, was born in 1939 and lived and worked until the end of his life.
The house originally belonged to Merab's grandfather, Vladimir Demuria, a prominent public figure, educator, and author of numerous Russian-language textbooks.
The courtyard of the house is associated with many significant historical events. In 1924, the first state and public institution known as the “Mountain Children's Home” was established here. Later, the courtyard became home to the Scientific Research Institute of Pedagogy and the Iakob Gogebashvili Library.
Over time, it developed into one of Tbilisi's important educational centers, bringing together distinguished Georgian philosophers, philologists, psychologists, historians, educators, and other intellectuals.
During the second half of the 20th century, the courtyard became an important center of Georgia's national liberation movement. To this day, it is affectionately known as “Merab's Courtyard.”
The Merab Kostava Memorial House Museum was founded in 1991 through the initiative and leadership of Georgia's first president, Zviad Gamsakhurdia.
From the museum's opening until her death in 2003, it was directed by Merab Kostava's mother, Olga Demuria-Kostava. She donated two rooms of her private apartment to the state for the establishment of the memorial museum.
The Merab Kostava Memorial House Museum preserves his personal belongings, original furniture, private library, manuscripts, and collections of musical scores and vinyl records.
Of particular historical significance are photographs and documents related to Georgia's national liberation movement in the second half of the 20th century, Kostava's personal letters, and underground newspapers and magazines published under his initiative.
