A unique Butoh performance where the swelling energy of the sea and the silence of the earth unite the viewer’s soul into a single continuous cycle.
“One of the most original dance theaters you will ever see.” — The New York Times
MEGURI — “Vibrant Sea, Tranquil Land” was created in 2015 by Ushio Amagatsu, the legendary founder of the internationally renowned Japanese avant-garde dance company Sankai Juku.
The 90-minute, seven-part work explores cyclical natural processes — the movement of water, the changing of the seasons, and the long-term transformations of the Earth.
Through Butoh’s uniquely expressive language, the performance combines frozen stage imagery and ritualized group formations set against a backdrop of minimalist yet emotionally stirring music. It embodies the flow of time, the rhythm of the seasons, and the transformation of the environment — the metamorphosis of the Earth itself.
“Meguri” is a pictographic symbol representing all that turns and revolves — like the Earth, the circulating air between continents and oceans, the movement of waters.
Covered in white dust, with shaved heads, the performers move like a slow current, symbolizing the erasure of memory and the act of rebirth.
