Elderly gangsters Mark and Hans find themselves in a debt pit in front of the mysterious and powerful American. To avoid certain death, they decide to kidnap a rare vaccine from a laboratory that targets those who engage in love without love.

There are two of the most beautiful French actresses in one film: Julie Delpy and Juliette Binoche. The camera of the indispensable and unique Jean-Yves Escoffier (he became famous for his work on Carax's films) captures the colors: vibrant, bold, and solid. Off-camera, David Bowie's «Modern Love» plays, while Denis Lavant tries to convey the idea of modern love through movement, dance, and spasmodic running interrupted by bouts of pain.
