Description

On November 7, Academy will host a concert by one of the most distinctive artists in post-punk and darkwave music — American musician Mareux.

Musician and producer Aryan Ashtiani, who performs under the name Mareux, creates music filled with longing and the ghosts of past love. Long before his track “The Perfect Girl” — his interpretation of The Cure’s 1987 song — went viral in 2021, the Los Angeles-based artist had already built a loyal cult following stretching from Eastern Europe to South America.

After more than a decade of developing his post-punk and darkwave-inspired dance sound — defined by deep echoing vocals and melancholic melodies — he released his debut album Lovers From the Past through Warner Records and Revolution Records. The album is a dark yet magnetic collection exploring heartbreak and shattered illusions.

Thanks to his role in reigniting interest in post-punk and darkwave among a new internet generation, Mareux has become part of the forefront of modern gothic music.
“I want to become a gateway to older subcultural genres for people discovering alternative music today,” the artist says.

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
