Music you simply can’t listen to without feeling something. On November 7, the Academy will host a concert by MAREUX, one of the most distinctive American artists on the post-punk and darkwave scene.
Musician and producer Aryan Ashtiani, who performs under the name Mareux, creates music steeped in stories of longing and the ghosts of past love. Even before his track The Perfect Girl — his interpretation of The Cure’s 1987 song — went viral in 2021, the Los Angeles-based artist had steadily built a devoted cult following stretching from Eastern Europe to South America.
After more than a decade of developing his post-punk and darkwave-inspired dance sound, characterized by deep, echoing vocals and melancholic melodies, Mareux released his debut album, Lovers From the Past, via Warner Records / Revolution Records. The album is a collection of dark yet magnetic tracks exploring heartbreak and disillusionment.
Thanks to his role in reigniting interest in post-punk and darkwave among a new generation online, Mareux has found himself at the forefront of a new and innovative wave of gothic music.
“I want to be a gateway to older subcultural genres for people who are discovering alternative music today,” the musician says.
