The tragic events of the early 20th century forced many artists to leave their homelands and start anew. Their fates ranged from personal tragedy to triumph. They endured great hardships — losing their homeland, personal loss, and difficult living conditions. Some managed to achieve international recognition and left a lasting mark on art history.
We’ll talk about the most well-known of them, explore the challenges they faced, and how those experiences were reflected in their work. We will also look at how Adolf Hitler’s rise in Europe contributed to the transformation of the United States into the global center of artistic innovation in the second half of the 20th century.
The lecture will be led by Liana Lashkhia, art historian and independent researcher.
