Lecture “Death as an Image: How Artists Speak About Violence and Death”
During the lecture, we will explore how art engages with death and violence — from 17th-century painting to contemporary installations. We will look at how human attitudes toward death have changed and how this is reflected in visual imagery across different eras.
We will also discuss how 19th-century photography turned death into a mass spectacle for the first time — and why images of violence both bring us closer to others’ suffering and, at the same time, make us привыкшими к нему.
We will examine how contemporary artists approach these themes through different media.
