Law and Literature: Global Experience and the Georgian Context

📚 On October 29, 2026, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University will host the scientific conference "Law and Literature: Global Experience and the Georgian Context." The conference aims to explore the interdisciplinary relationship between law and literature and encourage critical discussions on justice, power, and society.

Law is one of the key mechanisms regulating social relations, defining responsibility, and protecting human rights. At the same time, it is often viewed as both a guarantor of justice and a tool of social control. These issues are particularly relevant in countries where democratic institutions remain fragile and where a gap exists between formal legal norms and their practical implementation.

📖 Literature offers valuable perspectives on these dilemmas by revealing:

▪️ hidden mechanisms of power;

▪️ forms of social inequality;

▪️ diverse understandings of justice.

Conference Topics

• Law and power in literary narratives;
• Ethics, morality, and legal responsibility;
• Conflict between law and conscience, civil disobedience, and resistance;
• The "outsider" figure, individual morality versus legal order, and the criminalization of protest;
• Law under totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, state violence, and systemic injustice;
• Individual and collective responsibility, obedience versus resistance;
• Trauma, historical memory, and narratives of justice;
• Marginalized communities, minorities, social exclusion, and legal regulation.

Who Can Participate

The conference welcomes researchers, PhD holders, doctoral candidates, and scholars in the fields of law, social sciences, and humanities.
