Based on a screenplay by Alain Robbe-Grillet, In a rich and vast hotel that seems like a labyrinth, a man pursues a married woman, claiming that they had a passionate and vivid romance last year, either in Marienbad, Karlsbad, or some other resort town. She insists that she remembers nothing, but somewhat uncertainly. Meanwhile, their spouses observe them, doubting the innocence of the relationship between the two conversing individuals. Whether the romance actually happened or not is decisively impossible to understand. Has someone lost their memory, or does someone else have a rich imagination? And if all this is fiction, then who among the characters is lying? And if it's a dream, then who is dreaming about whom?
This is one of those films where it's almost impossible to understand what is really happening. Furthermore, attempting to grasp the plot, connect, and explain fragments of conversations and images will only spoil the overall impression. It is recommended to watch without seeking understanding.
Even if no one understood anything, the film has had a huge influence on French cinema as well as on influential international directors such as Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Stanley Kubrick, and David Lynch. Peter Greenaway said: "Sometimes I think that when I make films, I'm trying to remake 'Last Year at Marienbad.'"
