The time of the Napoleonic Wars. Her Majesty's military sailing ship "Surprise," navigating the vastness of the Atlantic, is unexpectedly attacked by a massive unknown ship that emerges from the fog. Thanks to the courage and resourcefulness of the crew, "Surprise" manages to escape death. Despite severe damage and losses, Captain Jack Aubrey, nicknamed Lucky Jack, decides to pursue the enemy and sets off on a chase that will take him to the ends of the earth.
The film won two Oscars (for cinematography and sound editing). It was nominated for an additional eight awards, seven of which (all possible) are "technical," a feat previously achieved only by "Titanic."
