Motherhood as horror.
Linda is forced to care for her seriously ill daughter alone while her husband is often away working at sea. Physically and emotionally exhausted, she continues to tend to her child, all the while needing care herself, perhaps even more than her dependent. The film contrasts the idealized image of motherhood with the raw, harsh, and exaggeratedly unhappy reality of a burned-out woman, highlighting just how draining invisible domestic labor can be.
Silver Bear for Best Actress.
