Hirayama's day begins with tending to maple saplings, which he later plants in the park. At dawn, he gets into his van, turns on the cassette player, and heads to work: Hirayama is a janitor at public toilets in Tokyo. Beyond his orderly weekdays, he enjoys music by Lou Reed and Patti Smith, books from the local store, and trees that he captures on his Olympus film camera. Several unexpected encounters shake up Hirayama's routine life.
