Holy Motors

A luxury limousine drives through the streets of Paris. In it an infinitely tired actor goes to the next task. Each task (the whole day is scheduled by the minute) includes not the actor's reincarnation, not the living of someone else's life - it is not clear to the end. Monsieur from the limousine in one day will be an assassin, a dying old man, an abandoned lover, the father of a teenage girl, a beggar on the porch, a psycho and a computer simulation. The hero of the film will be thrown into other people's lives, he will hug other people's wives and children, kill other people's enemies. But it is decidedly unclear who he is. What kind of «Holy Motors»? And if this is a play, then where is the director, who writes the scripts and where the hell did all the audience go?

After «Lovers on the Bridge» Leos Karaks fell silent for seven years, then shot the not very successful melodrama «Pola X» with his new wife Katerina Golubeva starring. And he was silent again. Ten years later, «Holy Motors» appear, which Cannes greets «not even with applause, but with ecstatic trampling and happy hooting».

This film is also dedicated to the same Katerina Golubeva, who tragically passed away. Details are hinted at the St. Petersburg`s actress, and they are not easy to notice if you do not know in advance. A round window in which a girl is sitting – their daughter Nastya. And St. Isaac's Cathedral, appearing from nowhere among the Parisian streets.

Must see because this is an absolute masterpiece, the best film by Leos Carax, the best role of Denis Lavant and one of our most intimately close films, somewhere in the top five.
