HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC: THE ARTIST WHO CHANGED MODERN ART
Born into an aristocratic family, Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa inherited not only noble titles but also a rare genetic disorder. While his family tried to hide their "different" son, Henri found acceptance in the cabarets and brothels of Montmartre—among society's outcasts.
He painted the stars and everyday characters of Parisian nightlife, captured a world that masked sorrow with endless celebration, became the pioneer of the modern advertising poster, and found a place where he was truly accepted.
His family, however, never approved. His father urged him not to sign his works with the Toulouse-Lautrec name, while relatives believed he should choose "more respectable" subjects.
As history proved, none of that mattered. Today, the name Toulouse-Lautrec is known far beyond the world of French aristocracy.
During the lecture you'll discover:
How Toulouse-Lautrec influenced Van Gogh, the Moulin Rouge, Andy Warhol, and many others.
How the singers and dancers of Montmartre felt about appearing on his famous posters.
Why Henri earned the nickname "The Coffee Pot."
The artist also had two surprisingly modern hobbies: dressing up for playful photographs and cooking. The lecture will feature his most unusual photographs and even a few of his recipes.
The lecture will be presented by Galina Apryshkina — an art historian, lecturer, and guide with many years of experience in Moscow and Tbilisi.
