For 26 consecutive years, “Mega” has been honoring and supporting individuals working in the field of art — recognizing their contribution, and awarding them for their creative achievements and outstanding works produced during the year.
Over the years, the award has immortalized the names of those who left a remarkable legacy in the development of Georgian art. With this purpose, several special prizes were established:
“King’s Mega” named after Irakli Charkviani,
“Odzela’s Mega” named after the exceptionally talented Georgian musician Dato Otselashvili,
“Teona’s Mega” in memory of the undisputed jewel of Georgian folk, Teona Kumsiashvili.
The winners of these nominations are traditionally awarded by close family members.
In 2015, additional special awards were introduced:
“Eto’s Mega,” named after Eter Kakulia, in the nomination “Positive of the Year,”
“Temo’s Mega,” in memory of the great Georgian folk singer Teymuraz Tsiklauri,
“Doija’s Mega,” in honor of Zurab Doijashvili,
“Mamuka’s Mega,” named after Mamuka Onashvili.
Winners in these categories are selected through monitoring from among distinguished Georgian artists, in agreement with the families.
This year, at the 26th ceremony, 30–40 nominations will be awarded. The event will host 300–500 invited guests. For all 26 years, it has been covered by all major media outlets, and the full recording is broadcast by the television company “Stars” (“Varskvlavebi”).
