Mary Shelley wrote in an era when the intellectual and literary world was almost entirely dominated by men. It is precisely within this context that the central act of Frankenstein — the creation of life — takes on particular significance.
A young woman writes about a man who seeks to create life without a woman. Victor Frankenstein claims the power of a creator, yet immediately after bringing his creature into existence, he abandons his responsibility toward it.
The novel thus raises a question that remains remarkably relevant today: is the ability to create something enough to justify the right to create it? And what responsibility does a creator bear?
Margherita Saltamacchia explores the relationship between Mary Shelley and her creation, Victor Frankenstein, and then the relationship between Victor Frankenstein himself and the creature he brings to life.
Through this double mirror, creator and creation become reflections of one another.
Critics have described the production as an “intense and personal reinterpretation” of Mary Shelley's masterpiece — a performance crafted with exceptional attention to detail, capable of captivating audiences and inspiring a renewed love for the world of Frankenstein.
