Description

Graphic and brand designers, students, and anyone interested in typography, type design, or font engineering are invited to a two-day practical workshop where we will learn how to create a high-quality Georgian adaptation in the style of an existing Latin typeface.

During the workshop:
● we will explore the fundamental principles of type design;
● examine how a multi-script typeface functions as a system (proportions, contrast, rhythm, “voice”);
● analyze real examples and common mistakes in Georgian adaptations;
● then move to practice: based on a selected Latin typeface, we will construct Georgian letters and develop a working Georgian version in Glyphs.

The workshop will be led by Akaki Razmadze and Aleksandre Charkviani — designers with experience working with Google, Monotype, and Typotheque.

Participants should have experience working with vector software; prior knowledge of Glyphs is not required.
All participants will be provided with equipment and Glyphs licenses (with the support of Glyphs).

📍 Location: 10 Merab Aleksidze St., Georgian-American University (GAU) building, ground floor
🗓 Date/Time: February 21–22, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Font Adaptation Workshop: Harmonizing Georgian and International Typefaces

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
