Flags Tell Stories
The Georgian five-cross flag is the oldest in the world after Denmark's flag, the 'Dannebrog.' 'This has been confirmed by the World Heraldry Council'—this statement belongs to Eldar Shengelaia, the Chairman of the State Council of Heraldry of Georgia in 2004, who personally traveled to Paris, France. There, in the cartographic department of the National Library, he saw two portolans (nautical charts) featuring the five-cross flag used to represent Georgia.
The educational program 'Flags Tell Stories,' offered by the Tbilisi Museums Union – Merab Kostava Memorial House-Museum, will take you through the five-millennium-long history of flags. You will learn about what the first flag looked like and how it transformed over the centuries; when it became a state symbol; which state flags are the oldest; and what the flags of King David the Builder or Queen Tamar looked like.
At the end of the program, participants will also test their skills by trying to recognize the state flags of various countries out of 216 nations.
