Film Club at Auditori: Screening & Discussion of Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan, 2023)
Tomorrow marks the release of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. We thought it would be the perfect opportunity to revisit his previous masterpiece—or experience it for the first time if you missed it.
This Sunday, we're watching Oppenheimer, the epic biographical drama that won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The film follows the life of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), widely known as the "father of the atomic bomb." It traces the defining moments of his life—from leading the secret Manhattan Project and witnessing the terrifying Trinity test to the political persecution he faced after the war and his profound moral struggle over creating a weapon capable of destroying humanity.
Joining Murphy is an outstanding cast featuring Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh.
After the screening, we'll discuss Nolan's use of nonlinear storytelling, sound design, and the interplay between color and black-and-white cinematography. We'll also explore the film's complex ethical dilemmas and the historical context behind its events.
