The final film of Lars von Trier's "Europe" trilogy, which also includes "The Element of Crime" and "Epidemic". These films do not share a common plot and are made in different styles, but they are thematically linked. Reflecting on the state of the Old World with his characteristic catastrophic vision, Trier offers three scenarios of a European post-apocalypse. "Europa" is a hypnotic dream about post-war Germany in which a naively idealistic young American falls in love with the daughter of a Nazi official while an underground Nazi resistance carries out terrorist acts against the American administration. This is the director's last film shot on film and possibly the most visually meticulous of his works.
