The film, which the director himself considered to be one of the most important.
In childhood, the three sisters were inseparable, but as they grew up, they distanced themselves from each other. The fatal illness of one of them forces them to gather in the same house for the first time in many years. And there is less and less time to become close to each other again.
«Whispers and Screams» is probably the only Bergman film in which he allows himself to make color a full-fledged hero. Women in white live in a red house. Death approaches now quietly, on tiptoe, then attacks like a wild beast, tormenting the body of one of the sisters. White lace rules here, with perfect artificial interiors and, in contrast, honest, naturalistic, uncombed death.
Bergman himself explained the abundance of red in this way: «The film "Cries and Whispers" is a study of the soul; to me, the soul has always seemed like a moist membrane of various shades of red».
The film won the Oscar for best cinematography.
