Set in early 1970s Brazil during the military dictatorship, the film centers on the fate of the family of engineer and former parliamentarian Rubens Paiva. Following the kidnapping of the Swiss ambassador, political instability escalates. Rubens’ arrest and subsequent disappearance mark the beginning of a tragedy: his wife, Eunice, is imprisoned, their children face repression, and the press spreads false reports of Paiva’s "escape."
Despite pressure from the authorities, Eunice never gives up the search for her husband. She appeals to the courts, finds witnesses, and gradually becomes a symbol of the fight for truth. Decades later, in democratic Brazil, her efforts and the memory of Rubens finally receive official recognition.
The film spans nearly half a century — from the tragedy of loss to Eunice’s later years as she lives with Alzheimer’s, yet still preserves the memory of her husband and the history of the Brazilian nation.
